If you haven’t submitted your projects yet, please do them first before you do the final one.

  1. Listen to Faith Ringgold read her book Tar Beach.  You do not need to draw anything. Read, listen, enjoy the story and look at her beautiful illustrations.  You can find the link at the end of the written lesson.

  2. I would like you to write 3 things about the book Tar Beach.  For example:

In the story Tar Beach Cassie liked ___________________________

Faith Ringgold(born 1930) is a contemporary American artist who lives in Englewood, NJ.  She was raised in Harlem, New York. During that time Harlem was experiencing a “Renaissance”.  A rebirth of art and music.  Around the corner from her her lived ** Duke Ellington and *** Langston Hughes .  Her childhood friend was **** Sonny Rollins .

In 1950 Faith enrolled in the City College of NY.  She wanted to major in Art but because she was a woman the City College would only allow her to major in Art Education, to become an Art Teacher.  She taught in the New York City schools.

Ms. Ringgold is a painter, writer, mixed media (textiles mixed with painting), scultor and performance artists.  She is most famous for her narrative Quilts.

Scroll down to take a look at some of her artwork.  Do you recognize any of the people in her paintings?  As you can see, Faith was influenced by artists and poticial leaders.

**Duke Ellington (born 1899 ) was a Jazz/Swing composer, musician and bandleader from 1914 until his death in 1974.

***Langston Hughes (born 1901) wrote poetry in the literary art form called Jazz Poetry from 1926 until his death 1967.

My favorite poem is:

Dreams

Hold fast to dreams

For if dreams die

Life is a broken winged bird

That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams

For when dreams go

Life is barren field

Frozen with snow.

KEEP ON SCROLLING DOWN.

****Sonny Rollins, Faith’s childhood friend, was born one month before her in September 1930.  He is an American Jazz Tenor Saxaphonist and is alive today.

Now that you know a little bit about Faith Ringgold enjoy listening to her read to you.

# 7 Lesson

K- 6TH Grades

KEITH HARING was an American Pop Artist.  He was born in 1958 in Reading Pennsylvania and died in 1990 in New York City.  He was known for his graffiti style of art found all over the streets of New York City during the 1980s.

Here is a photo of Keith:

Examples of Keith’s artwork.  Take note of the short black lines he uses to show the people moving and in what direction they are going.

Take a look at this image.  Just by changing the background colors the whole image changes.

Here is the same image and instead of paint it was created with torn paper.  Again, a whole different look for the image.

Which one do you like best?

Now, let’s practice  drawing a person moving and showing direction.

You may use ANY drawing tools.

Start with a stick figure.

                                     Step 1:

Step 2:  Add a ball, lacrosse stick, baseball bat, trampoline

anything you’d like.  How about another figure?

                 Step 3:

Step 4: Erase the stick figure lines.

                  Step 5:

Step 6: Color in the WHOLE page, sign your name and class:

Step 6: Color in the WHOLE page, just like Keith Haring did AND sign your first name and class: Suzy K  2-J

There is NO DUE Date.  Take your time, follow all the directions.  This should be fun.

#6 ART LESSON

Kindergarten - 6TH GRADES

STAIN GLASS LANDSCAPE

This project can take a few days.

  You will need to:

Watch a Youtube Presentation

Draw a landscape

Color the landscape

Apply oil on the back of your drawing

Wait for it to dry COMPLETELY

There are three sections of a landscape:

The foreground - the area that is closest to the viewer  on the bottom of the image.

The middle ground - exactly how it sounds - in the middle of the image.

The background -  the top of the image and anything behind the objects in the foreground and middle ground.

                      Examples:

This is a painting by Vincent van Gogh called Starry Night

He was a Dutch painter (from the Netherlands).

Notice the large cypress tree is in the foreground.  It looks so much larger than the church and the village in the middle ground.

The church steeple appears to be taller than the mountains.

We know that the mountains are larger than the church, and the church is taller than the tree.

This is a painting by an American artist, Winslow Homer .

It is called Crack the Whip .  It is a game children played at recess.

Notice the boys are not wearing shoes and they appear to be taller than the school.

In the middle ground the one room schoolhouse appears to be taller than the mountains in the background.

Now, lets get started with our Stain Glass Landscape.

Watch the whole lesson first.  You can always go back to stop/pause and review.       https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v368l7nAltE

Materials:  copy paper (kindergarten -2nd grade can cut the paper in half)

Sharpie or crayola markers, Sharpies work best however crayola markers are fine too.  They might fad in the window after about 5 days.

          Pencil       Eraser     Cotton balls

Mineral oil, olive oil or baby oil.  I used mineral oil.

STEP 1 - draw a landscape: remember to outline everything in black sharpie.  This will represent the black lead found in a stainglass window to separate the colors.

STEP 2 - color the landscape with markers:

As you may notice I added trees, wavey lines to represent water, curved lines to show roads in the mountains and a small city in the middle ground (just like in Starry Night).

STEP 3 - sign your masterpiece using your first name and the first initial of your last name and your class.

For example:      Winslow H 4D

                          Vincent vG 2H

STEP 4 - flip your paper over and place it on a piece of newspaper or anything that will protect the area where you are working.  The back of the drawing will be facing you.

STEP 5 - now dab your cotton ball into the oil.  I found that when I saturated the back with the oil it had the best effect.

STEP 6 - let it dry - probably over night.

STEP 7 - hang it in a window.

STEP 8 - take a picture and send it to me:  boccanfusoa@oradellschool.org

#5 Lesson

Color Wheel

This is a No Drawing, No Coloring, No Youtube Lesson

The whole family can submit one color wheel.

So work together with your brothers and sisters.

Here is what the Color Wheel looks like, you know the ones that are hanging up on multiple walls in the artroom:

  1. Look around your house and find objects that you can place on the floor ( or on your bed or couch)  in the same order as the color wheel.

The easiest way to do this is start with the primary colors : red , yellow and blue (no special placing, red could be on the top, or on the left).

  1. Place them in a triangle with plenty of space between them so that you can fill in the spaces with secondary colors : green , orange and violet .

  2. Then find intermediate colors : red orange ; red violet

                                                      blue green ; blue violet

                                                      yellow orange , yellow green

Let us think of what items you can use:

Stuffed animals, pillows, kitchen items, board game covers, towels, clothes.

This is my color wheel:

Kindergarten - 6th Grade

A Drawing of My Home

Use the 12x18” manilla paper given to you draw and color a picture of your home (house or apartment building).

Materials:

  • Manilla paper or any paper you have at home

  • Pencil   Eraser Color pencils   Crayons Ruler (optional)

  • NO MARKERS

Go outside and take a photo of your home.

Then make a list of exactly what you see:

  1. Colors

  2. Shapes: geometric/organic

  3. Textures: bumpy, smoothe,

  4. Tall or wide home

  5. Grass, shrubs, trees

  6. Fence

  7. anything at all

Using a pencil start in the center of the paper by drawing a geometric shape that best describes your house. A square, rectangle or a combination of shapes.

Remember: draw lightly, you will probably want to erase!

  • Draw a horizontal line to represent the horizon line (this will insure that your house is not flying in the middle of the sky).

  • Draw in windows doors, shutters, steps etc.  Add as much detail as you can possibe draw.

When you think you are ready you can begin to add color. Remember only pencil, color pencil or crayons.  NO MARKERS.

IMPORTANT:   HAVE FUN WITH THIS PROJECT, INCLUDE YOUR FAMILY
